A Vegan In Houston

I'm back from Houston, where we had so much fun! It was cloudy and raining the first day we arrived which was on a Saturday. After driving around for some time, looking for our hotel and admiring the many buildings, we decided to stop somewhere and get some lunch.

Thankfully, Houston is a large city with many veg-friendly establishments so I was able to find an almost all-vegan restaurant nearby. Upon entering Pepper Tree, I was surprised by the cleanliness and friendliness of the place. Although the restaurant itself was pretty small, it still had a very welcoming feel to it. My parents were very pleased about that too.

Overwhelmed by the many options (after all, it isn't every day that I get to go to a vegetarian restuaruant), I decided to order the General Tso's Vegan Chicken. I loved the taste of my dish, just not so much the texture. I guess it was a bit too chewy for me.

My sister ordered the Vegan Chicken With Cashew Nuts and boy was it good! She let me try a piece of her "chicken" and I immediately regretted not ordering what she did. The taste and texture of the faux meat was very much like turkey while mine was more like a rubbery chicken.

My dad's meal, though not pictured, was some sort of faux beef dish. I had a piece of the "beef" and agreed with my dad that it wasn't all that great. There was just something a little weird about the taste.

My mom and little sister each settled on the buffet so that they could get whatever they wanted. I think my little sister really liked her sushi!

While we were debating whether or not to get dessert, one of the ladies in charge of the restuarant was already piling on some Sesame Balls on a plate just for us. Isn't that sweet? Now, I'm not sure whether or not these were actually vegan, but I'm trusting they were, especially since my mom told the lady that I was a vegan. But regardless, these chocolate filled dumpling-like balls were delicious. I also had a tiny piece of their Coconut Vegan Cake which was also yummy.

Overall, our trip to Houston was well worth it. The area where we stayed at had so many wonderful shopping centers and a huge three part mall. Hopefully I can go to college there some day especially since the city has so many hospitals and medical centers where I can surely find a job.

Welcome back!! I haven't been to Houston since I was 8 years old (that's over 10 years ago!! whoa!!), so it's a pleasure to read that you had a great time overall.

How sweet of that woman in charge of the restaurant, with the sesame balls!

Great post - I have never been to Houston, but if I ever make it there I will be sure to look out for that restaurant because that tofu dish looks so great - and sesame balls are great aren't they!!!

It looks like you had a yummy stay in Houston! It's so awesome that your family agreed to go with you, because mine is usually not game for vegetarian restaurants. Those sesame balls look fabulous -- the buffet sounds awesome but I think I would have overdone it with it being mostly vegan, so just ordering an entree sounds like the smartest move.

I'm guessing you want to work in healthcare -- have you decided what you've wanted to major in in college?
